‘WE ARE ONE’ VOGUE

Hanan Ibrahim featured in Vogue Australia’s ‘WE ARE ONE’ series; celebrating and highlighting the voices and actions of young bla(c)k womxn advocating and educating for a future of equity and justice.

This whole idea of having a homogenous world isn’t what we need. We need a world that is genuinely accepting of all the things that make us all so individually beautiful, whether that be our differences in race, gender, sexuality, culture. I love who I am and given the choice I’d come back exactly as who I am but what the world needs is empathy and understanding. We don’t need one where we’re all the same and one. We need a more diverse world that embraces and celebrates who we are and the key to that is living with one another, on all levels, despite our identities.

[The world I imagine looks like] freedom that can only be achieved without fear. No fear in losing our voices, losing our jobs when we do speak up. No fear in losing our liberties, our communities. And most importantly no fear in losing our lives. Constantly seeing Black people being killed in police custody, on the streets, being locked up ... tormented, ridiculed, ignored, interrupted, looked down upon and bullied for existing in the bodies they do is agonising and traumatic. There’s just so much injustice that is happening outside of what is being posted on social media every single day to people with real problems and hurtful experiences. The world I look most forward to is one in which there is true freedom for all people.
